Annoying friend

22nd August 2005

On Saturday afternoon Rick and I went round to Lorraine and Harry’s as they have decided to return the computer they got the previous Saturday as they still haven’t got the two leads that had to be ordered. They had got back the computer they had given to their daughter as a temporary measure until they get another. Rick didn’t have time to sort out the internet connection though as Harry was working and Lorraine was going to the worship evening at the church. After that finished Rick picked me up as I hadn’t gone due to having an upset stomach from the Chinese takeaway we’d had Thursday night with Janice and John. For some reason Rick hasn’t been able to do an internet connection as each one he tried couldn’t find the modem so Lorraine will have to do without until she gets another computer.

While we there, Kevin was there as well, the conversation got round to Rick and I having hospital appointments for infertility so we didn’t have a problem talking about it. We were gobsmacked as Lorraine defended the consultant’s behaviour stating that there must have been a good reason for him being unhelpful nor could she accept that he had lied to us. It turns out Lorraine had infertility treatment years ago and he was her consultant so she thinks the sun shines out of his backside and that he is doing God’s work. She also told us we shouldn’t have brought God into the discussions with him as that would be another reason he wouldn’t help us. Lorraine wasn’t listening properly to what we said as the only time either of us brought God into the conversation was when Rick walked of the last appointment and said God Bless to the consultant. Kevin was rather mystified by what she was saying and did his best to stick up for us and tried to change the conversation as he realized I wasn’t happy about what she was saying. She put me on a right downer and made me feel really inadequate by saying the Lord’s plan was obviously for us not to have children. I found it quite hurtful as she has been the first friend to be negative towards us having children. After we left both Rick and I felt that what she had said wasn’t of God. Yesterday Rick had a chat with Kevin before the service who apparently agreed with us and had had words with Lorraine after we left on Saturday night.

About Philippa

I am married to Rick and we live in a small town in County Durham. We have two dogs, a cat and two budgies. I am also an adoption survivor. In 1981 my son was born and I was then forced to surrender him. It took 23 years and reunion for my to find out that my son's adoption was legally known as a forced adoption and illegal but social workers got away with it because mothers didn't know their rights.
